DESCRIPTION
"Mens sana in corpore sano": ("A healthy mind in a healthy body") are the initial words of a poem by the Roman poet Juvenal (circa 100 AD). Used as a motto for universities and athletic clubs ever since it was written, the poem calls for the abandonment of "wrath and desire" and of the "fear of death" because "the only road to a life of peace is virtue".

This piece is the result of co-composition of two composers of different backgrounds and generations. André Douw (1951) from Netherlands and Kaveh Vares (1982) from Iran.

In 2013 they collaborated on writing this piece which has been finalized and premiered on 2014. Every single decision in the process of writing this piece was made by the composers, together.

The challenge of this piece was to find the right sounds for these uplifting words of Juvenal's poem. In the course of the composition they travel through a whole range of emotions and all types of daring tests not unlike the ordeals of Orpheus on his way to Hades to save his beloved Eurydice. While Orpheus in the end dies at the hands of those who could not hear his divine music, the two composers intend to live on for ever and ever in a blissful peace. After all, if music has a reason and a purpose it can only be the harmony of the spheres.
